Leon Batttista Alberti

Leon Batttista Alberti (1404-1472) was an Italian architect, theorist, sculptor, painter, archaeologist and writer of the early renaissance. He designed some of the most visionary buildings of the 15c including the church of S. Maria Novella and the Palazzo Rucellai in Florence. He incorporated in them classical features of the Roman ruins of which he had made a systematic archaeological study His De Re Aedificatoria, a comprehensive ten-volume masterpiece on renaissance and classical architecture, was the first printed book on architecture and the first architectural treatise to appear since that of Vitruvius in classical antiquity, and its effect on architects was as wide and fundamental as Vitruvius had been

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind and multifaceted talents of Leon Battista Alberti, an influential figure in the early Renaissance period. Born in 1404, Alberti was not only an Italian architect but also a theorist, sculptor, painter, archaeologist, and writer. His innovative designs left an indelible mark on 15th-century architecture. Among his notable creations are the awe-inspiring church of S. Maria Novella and the Palazzo Rucellai in Florence. What set Alberti apart was his incorporation of classical features from Roman ruins into his architectural masterpieces. This unique approach stemmed from his meticulous study of ancient archaeological sites. Alberti's groundbreaking work extended beyond physical structures; he authored "De Re Aedificatoria" a monumental ten-volume treatise on Renaissance and classical architecture. Notably, this masterpiece became the first printed book on architecture since Vitruvius' writings during classical antiquity. The profound impact of "De Re Aedificatoria" cannot be overstated as it influenced architects far and wide with its comprehensive insights into architectural principles. Just as Vitruvius had shaped ancient Rome's architectural landscape centuries before him, Alberti revolutionized Renaissance design through his visionary ideas. This remarkable print serves as a testament to Leon Battista Alberti's enduring legacy—a true polymath whose contributions continue to inspire generations of architects worldwide.
