Leon Battista Alberti, Italian polymath

Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472), Florentine artist and polymath. Alberti was born at Genoa and educated at Padua. In 1418 he went to Bologna to study law. In the early 1430s he went to Rome and took holy orders as a priest. Alberti had a gift for architecture and designed many buildings as well as writing several influential treatises. He regarded mathematics as the only common gound between art and science and used it to link art with the natural world. He was the first to codify the geometry of linear perspective as described by Brunelleschi, essential to much of Renaissance art. He also applied mathe=matics to cryptography, devising the first polyalhabetic cipher and a Cipher Disk for machine-assisted encryption. This woodcut comes from Giovios Elogia vivorum litris illustrium, published at Basel in 1577

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Leon Battista Alberti, an Italian polymath who left an indelible mark on various fields during the Renaissance. Born in 1404 in Genoa, Alberti's thirst for knowledge led him to study law in Bologna and eventually pursue a career as a priest in Rome. However, it was his exceptional talent for architecture that truly set him apart. Alongside designing numerous buildings, he penned influential treatises that shaped the field. Recognizing mathematics as the bridge between art and science, Alberti ingeniously employed geometric principles to establish linear perspective – a groundbreaking technique essential to Renaissance art. Beyond his architectural prowess, Alberti also delved into cryptography with unparalleled ingenuity. He devised the first polyalphabetic cipher and even created a Cipher Disk for machine-assisted encryption. His contributions revolutionized this secretive discipline and showcased his multifaceted brilliance. In this monochrome woodcut from Giovios Elogia vivorum litris illustrium (published in Basel in 1577), we catch a glimpse of Alberti's enigmatic persona. The vertical composition exudes elegance while emphasizing his role as both writer and architect. This image serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as an artist, mathematician, humanist, cryptographer, and overall intellectual force during the vibrant era of Florentine Renaissance.
