Le Thot replica of Lascaux cave painting C013 / 7374

Le Thot replica of Lascaux cave painting. The original Lascaux cave was closed to the public in 1963. As well as the full Lascaux II replica, a set of five replica paintings are housed at the Le Thot centre of prehistoric art (Espace Cro-Magnon), which opened in 1972. This is the Leaning Bisons Le Thot replica. The Lascaux cave paintings in south-western France, around 17, 000 years old, were painted by Cro-Magnon man, an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens), using red, brown and yellow ochre, and black manganese dioxide. They may have had religious and artistic significance. Photographed in 2010

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Le Thot replica of a famous cave painting from Lascaux, France. The original Lascaux cave, closed to the public since 1963, holds immense historical and cultural significance. In an effort to preserve this ancient artwork, a set of five replica paintings were created and are now housed at the Le Thot centre of prehistoric art. The featured replica is known as "Leaning Bisons" beautifully capturing the artistic prowess of Cro-Magnon man. Created approximately 17,000 years ago using natural pigments such as red, brown, yellow ochre, and black manganese dioxide, these paintings provide valuable insights into early European culture. The intricate details of these bison pictographs suggest that they held both religious and artistic importance for our ancestors. This photograph was taken in 2010 by Philippe Psaila and serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by our Paleolithic predecessors. As we marvel at this image today in the 21st century, it reminds us of our shared human heritage and deepens our understanding of prehistoric times. It stands as a reminder that art has always been an integral part of human expression throughout history. This remarkable piece is not only a visual delight but also offers invaluable insights into anthropology, paleontology, and archaeology. Its presence within the Le Thot museum contributes to preserving this priceless cultural treasure for generations to come while honoring its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
