Lavoisiers experiment for decomposing steam

Lavoisiers apparatus for decomposing steam. Contemporary drawing of the experiment by Antoine Lavoisier (1743-94) to decompose steam using iron. Steam was produced in the vessel (A) and was passed through a heated gun barrel (EF) in a furnace. Excess steam was condensed at left. The gas coming out of the tube at far left was inflammable air, known today as hydrogen. This experiment was performed in 1783/4

Apparatus History Of Science Hydrogen Lavoisier

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Antoine Lavoisier's groundbreaking experiment for decomposing steam using iron. The contemporary drawing, created by Lavoisier himself, depicts the apparatus he designed and used during this significant scientific endeavor in 1783/4. In the image, we see a vessel labeled "A" where steam is being produced. This steam then passes through a heated gun barrel (EF) located inside a furnace. On the left side of the apparatus, excess steam is condensed, while on the far left, a tube emits gas known today as hydrogen or inflammable air. Lavoisier's experiment not only demonstrated his meticulous approach to chemical research but also contributed greatly to our understanding of water decomposition and gas properties. By successfully isolating hydrogen from water vapor, he made an important discovery that paved the way for further advancements in chemistry. As we admire this historical snapshot of Lavoisier's apparatus, we are reminded of how instrumental it was in shaping the history of science. This image serves as a testament to Lavoisier's brilliance and dedication to unraveling nature's mysteries through experimentation and observation.
