Juan Ponce de Leon, Spanish explorer
Juan Ponce de Leon (c.1460-1521), Spanish explorer and discoverer of Florida. Ponce de Leon retired to Hispaniola (Dominican Republic), following a career that included sailing on Christopher Columbus second voyage. His retirement was cut short when the Spanish authorities made him Adelantado (Military Governor) following the death of Columbus. His first mission in 1509 was to colonise Puerto Rico, which he accomplished with a small number of troops and a greyhound that scared the natives. He remained the first governor of the island until 1511. During his voyage of 1513, Ponce de Leon discovered land and named it Pescua Florida (the place of flowers)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon. Born around 1460, Ponce de Leon's legacy is deeply intertwined with the discovery of Florida. After a notable career that included sailing on Christopher Columbus' second voyage, he retired to Hispaniola in the Dominican Republic. However, fate had other plans for him when he was appointed as Adelantado, or Military Governor, by the Spanish authorities following Columbus' death. In 1509, his first mission led him to colonize Puerto Rico with only a small number of troops and an unlikely ally - a greyhound that struck fear into the hearts of natives. Ponce de Leon remained as Puerto Rico's first governor until 1511 before embarking on his famous voyage in 1513. During this expedition, he stumbled upon uncharted land which he named "Pescua Florida" meaning "the place of flowers". This momentous discovery would forever etch his name in history books. The monochrome illustration beautifully captures Ponce de Leon's determined gaze and noble demeanor. It serves as a testament to his significant role in shaping America's early exploration and colonization efforts under Spanish rule. This remarkable portrait from Science Photo Library not only pays homage to one of history's most influential explorers but also invites us to delve deeper into the fascinating tales of courage and adventure that unfolded during the sixteenth century.
