Joseph Henry, US physicist
Joseph Henry (1797-1878), American physicist. Henry improved the design of the electromagnet, using a soft iron core wrapped in many turns of wire. He also designed the first reciprocating electric motor. He discovered the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction around the same time as Michael Faraday, but Faraday published his results first. Henry, however, is credited with discovering the phenomenon of self-induction, and the unit of inductance is named after him. He also introduced the electric relay, which made long- distance telegraphy possible. Henry was the first director of the Smithsonian Institute

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Joseph Henry, a renowned American physicist. Known for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of electromagnetism, Henry revolutionized the design of electromagnets by utilizing a soft iron core wrapped in multiple turns of wire. His innovative thinking also led him to create the first reciprocating electric motor. Although he discovered electromagnetic induction simultaneously with Michael Faraday, it was Faraday who published his findings first. However, Henry's significant contribution lies in his discovery of self-induction, which ultimately led to the naming of the unit of inductance after him. Furthermore, Joseph Henry introduced an essential invention called the electric relay that played a pivotal role in enabling long-distance telegraphy. This breakthrough opened up new possibilities for communication across vast distances. Notably, Joseph Henry served as the inaugural director of the esteemed Smithsonian Institute—a testament to his remarkable achievements and influence within scientific circles. Through this historical illustration captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported back in time to witness one man's indelible mark on physics and electrical engineering. It serves as a reminder that even amidst intense competition among scientists during that era, true innovation knows no boundaries or borders.
