John Knox, Scottish theologian
John Knox (1505-1572), Scottish clergyman. Knox was born at Haddington in East Lothian, Scotland, and educated at the University of St. Andrews in theology. He worked as a notary-priest (not a parochial priest) and was influenced by early church reformers. He was captured by the French during fighting at St. Andrews and taken to France before being exiled to England. When catholicism was reestablished in England Knox went to Geneva where he met John Calvin. In 1559 he returned to Scotland and led the reformation movement in the Church. The Presbyterian Church eventually replaced catholicism in Scotland, supported by parliament and the nobility. This engraving was published in Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain by Edmund Lodge in 1835

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed figure of John Knox, a prominent Scottish theologian and clergyman from the 16th century. Born in Haddington, Scotland, Knox received his theological education at the University of St. Andrews where he was greatly influenced by early church reformers. Initially working as a notary-priest rather than a parochial priest, his life took an unexpected turn when he was captured during fighting at St. Andrews and subsequently taken to France before being exiled to England. During his time in Geneva, Knox had the privilege of meeting John Calvin, which further shaped his religious beliefs and convictions. In 1559, upon returning to Scotland, he became a pivotal leader in the reformation movement within the Church. With unwavering determination and support from parliament and nobility alike, Knox played an instrumental role in replacing Catholicism with Presbyterianism throughout Scotland. The engraving itself is a remarkable piece published in Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain by Edmund Lodge in 1835. Its monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this powerful portrayal of Knox's intellectual prowess and devout commitment to his faith. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this historical moment through their lens, allowing us to appreciate both the physical appearance and profound influence that John Knox had on shaping religious philosophy during this transformative era.
