EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph from the Galerie medicale collection showcases Jean Fernel, a prominent French physician of the 16th century. Born into humble beginnings as the son of an innkeeper, Fernel rose to prominence in Paris and became renowned as the personal physician to King Henry II of France. His groundbreaking textbook published in 1554 revolutionized medical knowledge by systematically exploring physiology, pathology, and treatment. This influential work remained a standard reference for over a century. Fernel's expertise extended beyond his royal duties; he also served as court physician to Catherine de Medici. Notably, he introduced the term "physiology" to describe the study of how our bodies functioned and was credited with being the first to describe the spinal canal. Captured in this monochrome artwork by Pierre Roch Vigneron during the early 19th century, Fernel's portrait exudes wisdom and intellect. As a Caucasian male with distinguished features, he represents an important figure in European history who made significant contributions to medicine and science. This print serves as a testament to Fernel's lasting legacy within both academia and society at large. It stands as a reminder of his invaluable role as a pioneer in understanding human physiology while providing insight into medical practices during his era.
