Insulating the end of an Ariane rocket fuel tank

Ariane 5 production. An engineer fitting insulation to the end of the main cryogenic tank of an Ariane 5 launcher. A single tank is used which is split into two compartments. The small forward section holds 130 tonnes of liquid oxygen and the larger rear section holds 25 tonnes of liquid hydrogen. The tank is made of 3mm-thick aluminium, insulated on the outside by a 2cm layer of expanded polyurethane. The ends of the tanks are also insulated and have an aluminium foil covering for protection. Photographed at the Cryospace factory, Les Mureaux, France

Ariane Ariane 5 Ariane Rocket European Space Agency Launcher Rocket Space Flight Fuel Tank

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the meticulous process of insulating the end of an Ariane rocket fuel tank at the Cryospace factory in Les Mureaux, France. The skilled engineer in focus is seen fitting insulation to the main cryogenic tank of an Ariane 5 launcher, a crucial step in ensuring its optimal performance during space missions. The complexity and precision involved in this task are awe-inspiring. The single tank used for this rocket is divided into two compartments: a smaller forward section containing 130 tonnes of liquid oxygen and a larger rear section holding 25 tonnes of liquid hydrogen. Constructed from lightweight yet durable 3mm-thick aluminium, the tank's exterior is protected by a substantial 2cm layer of expanded polyurethane insulation. Every detail matters when it comes to space exploration, even down to insulating the ends of these tanks. To safeguard against external elements and maintain ideal temperature conditions within, aluminium foil covers are meticulously applied over the insulated ends. As we gaze upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the intricate processes that underpin European Space Agency's (ESA) mission success. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and dedication as engineers work tirelessly behind-the-scenes to propel us further into our celestial pursuits with each launch of an Ariane rocket.
