Illustration of a ventricular hole in the heart
Illustration of a ventricular hole in the heart. This hole in the septum between the two ventricles is a heart abnormality developed before birth (congenital). Below centre, the hole can be seen between column-like papillary muscles and tendons (upper centre) of a heart valve. The outer cardiac muscle is at lower right. This defect in the sep- tum that separates the ventricles causes blood to mix. Deoxygenated blood meant for the lungs may go to the body, while oxygenated blood may go back to the lungs. This is called " shunting". Such heart defects are diagnosed on an x-ray, ECG, or echo cardiogram. It is usually a treatable defect resulting from errors of development in the fetus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an intricate illustration of a ventricular hole in the heart, shedding light on a congenital abnormality that occurs before birth. The image focuses on the septum between the two ventricles, revealing a visible gap amidst column-like papillary muscles and tendons of a heart valve positioned above it. In the lower right corner, we witness the outer cardiac muscle. The presence of this defect disrupts the separation between ventricles, leading to an unfortunate mixing of blood within the heart. Deoxygenated blood intended for the lungs may mistakenly flow towards other parts of the body, while oxygenated blood might find its way back to the lungs. This phenomenon is referred to as "shunting". Fortunately, this condition can be diagnosed through various medical procedures such as x-rays, ECGs (electrocardiograms), or echo cardiograms. Once identified, healthcare professionals can provide appropriate treatment options for this treatable defect caused by developmental errors during fetal growth. This awe-inspiring artwork not only highlights a significant disease but also serves as a reminder of how advancements in medicine allow us to comprehend and address complex disorders affecting our vital organs like never before. Science Photo Library has once again captured an extraordinary moment in healthcare history with their remarkable depiction of this heart abnormality.
