Ichthyosaur marine reptiles
Ichthyosaurs. Artwork of two Ichthyosaurs, marine carnivorous reptiles, swimming underwater. They inhabited the seas of the Mesozoic Era from around 225-65 million years ago. They were extremely well adapted to their marine habitat, being streamlined and swift. They inhabited an ecological niche that was similar to that of the present day porpoises (marine mammals). The Ichthyosaurs adaptation to life in the water is seen in their inability to lay eggs on the land; instead they bore live young underwater. They probably used their tails for propulsion, steering with their flippers as they pursued their fish prey

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the incredible world of Ichthyosaur marine reptiles. These ancient creatures, which thrived during the Mesozoic Era millions of years ago, were perfectly adapted to their underwater habitat. With their streamlined bodies and remarkable speed, they resembled modern-day porpoises in terms of ecological niche. The artwork beautifully captures two Ichthyosaurs gracefully swimming beneath the ocean's surface. Their tails are seen propelling them forward while their flippers guide them towards their fish prey. Unlike most reptiles, these fascinating creatures did not lay eggs on land but instead gave birth to live young underwater. As we delve into this mesmerizing illustration, it becomes evident that these carnivorous predators ruled the prehistoric seas with unmatched prowess. The intricate details bring to life a time long gone when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth and aquatic reptiles reigned supreme. This image is a testament to the wonders of paleontology and highlights how scientific illustrations can transport us back in time. It serves as a reminder of our planet's rich history and offers a glimpse into an era filled with extraordinary creatures that have since become extinct. Science Photo Library continues to provide invaluable resources for researchers and enthusiasts alike who seek knowledge about our planet's past inhabitants without commercial intentions.
