Hyphae and asci of Sphaerotheca mildew

Mildew. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph of hyphae and ripe asci of the leaf mildew Sphaerotheca sp. The hyphae are the tangled filaments which make up a fungal colony. Asci (singular ascus) are the aerial, club-shaped spore-forming bodies seen here. Inside an ascus, eight ascospores develop and are violently discharged when ripe. The ascospores are carried away by air currents and may produce a new fungal colony if they land on appropriate material. Sphaerotheca species are plant parasites, various species invading the leaves and buds of dandelions, hops, gooseberries and roses. Magnification: x300 at 5x7cm size. x1950 at 10x8ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of hyphae and asci belonging to Sphaerotheca mildew, a type of leaf mildew. In this colored scanning electron micrograph, we can observe the tangled filaments known as hyphae that form a fungal colony. The aerial, club-shaped spore-forming bodies called asci are also visible in this image. Within each ascus, eight ascospores develop and are forcefully discharged when they reach maturity. These ascospores are then carried away by air currents and have the potential to establish new fungal colonies if they land on suitable material. Sphaerotheca species are notorious plant parasites that invade various plants such as dandelions, hops, gooseberries, and roses. Their presence often leads to detrimental effects on these plants' leaves and buds. This magnified view at 300 times its original size (5x7cm) or an impressive 1950 times larger (10x8ins) provides us with a deeper understanding of their structure and reproductive mechanisms. This stunning photograph not only highlights the beauty found within nature's microscopic realm but also serves as a valuable resource for mycologists studying fungi and plant pathology alike. It is courtesy of Science Photo Library, capturing the essence of nature's wonders through scientific imagery while shedding light on the fascinating world of mildew formation and propagation.
