Hurricane Emily, 14th July 2005

Hurricane Emily in the Caribbean Sea, at 19:15 GMT (20:15 BST) on 14th July 2005. At this stage Emily was a category four hurricane, the second strongest level, with winds of over 220 kilometres per hour. Emily battered the island of Grenada (just below centre at right) on the 14th before heading towards Jamaica (out of frame at top left). At top left is Hispaniola, divided into Haiti (left) and the Dominican Republic (right). At top centre is Puerto Rico, and the islands of the West Indies arc from top to bottom right. Emily is the second strong hurricane of the unusually early 2005 season, after Dennis the week before. Imaged by the GOES-12 satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the sheer power and intensity of Hurricane Emily, taken on the 14th of July 2005. As one of the strongest hurricanes recorded that year, Emily had reached category four status with winds exceeding a staggering 220 kilometers per hour. The image showcases the hurricane in all its glory as it swirls menacingly over the Caribbean Sea at 19:15 GMT (20:15 BST). The devastation caused by this formidable storm is evident as it battered Grenada before setting its sights on Jamaica, which lies just out of frame at top left. The photograph also provides a glimpse into other parts of the region, including Hispaniola divided between Haiti and the Dominican Republic at top left, Puerto Rico at top center, and various islands forming an arc from top to bottom right. This satellite image was captured by GOES-12 satellite technology, offering a unique perspective from space for meteorological analysis. Hurricane Emily marked an early occurrence in what would become an unusually active hurricane season in 2005. Preceded by Hurricane Dennis just a week prior, these severe storms served as reminders of nature's immense power and our vulnerability to its forces. This remarkable print serves as both a testament to scientific observation and a reminder of our ever-changing climate patterns in the twenty-first century.
