Human chromosome

Human chromosome. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human chromosome. Chromosomes occur in the nucleus of every cell in the body, carrying genetic information in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), arranged in discrete segments known as genes. Apart from the sex cells, every human cell contains 46 chromosomes, 23 inherited from the father and 23 from the mother. The chromosome shown here has replicated itself during cell division and so consists of two identical strands (chromatids) linked at their centre by a structure known as a centromere. Magnification: x10, 300 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a human chromosome. Through the lens of a scanning electron microscope, we are granted an up-close view of this vital component found within every cell in our bodies. The chromosome's vibrant colors highlight its significance as it carries the blueprint for our genetic information. Composed of DNA arranged in discrete segments called genes, chromosomes play a crucial role in determining our inherited traits and characteristics. In each non-sex cell, 46 chromosomes can be found - 23 from both the father and mother. This particular chromosome has undergone replication during cell division, resulting in two identical strands known as chromatids. At the center of this mesmerizing structure lies a centromere, linking these chromatids together. Its presence signifies the unity between these replicated strands and emphasizes their importance during cellular processes. With magnification at x10,300 and printed at a size of 6x7cm, this print allows us to marvel at nature's complexity on a microscopic level. It serves as a reminder that within each tiny nucleus resides an intricate system responsible for shaping who we are. Captured by Science Photo Library, this image is not only visually stunning but also offers valuable insights into genetics and heredity – topics that continue to fascinate scientists worldwide.
