HR 8799 planetary system, artwork C015 / 0794

HR 8799 planetary system. Diagram of the orbits (green) of three of the planets of the HR 8799 star. Discovered in 2008, these were the first extrasolar planets directly observed, using a combination of the Gemini North and Keck adaptive optics systems. HR 8799 is 129 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Pegasus. These three planets are designated b, c, and d. HR 8799 b (lower right) is around 5 times the mass of Jupiter, orbiting at 68 times the Earth-Sun distance (AU). HR 8799 c (upper left, 38) and HR 8799 d (upper right, 24 AU) are both around 7 Jupiter masses. A fourth inner planet (not shown) was discovered in 2009

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the HR 8799 planetary system, a groundbreaking discovery in the field of astronomy. The artwork beautifully depicts the orbits of three planets around the HR 8799 star, marking them as some of the first extrasolar planets ever directly observed by scientists. Discovered in 2008 using advanced technology such as Gemini North and Keck adaptive optics systems, these distant celestial bodies have revolutionized our understanding of exoplanets. Located approximately 129 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Pegasus, this planetary system continues to astound astronomers with its mysteries. The diagram highlights three specific planets known as b, c, and d. HR 8799 b is positioned at the lower right corner and boasts a mass five times that of Jupiter while orbiting at an impressive distance equivalent to 68 times that between Earth and Sun (AU). On the other hand, both HR 8799 c (upper left) and HR 8799 d (upper right) weigh about seven Jupiter masses each. Notably absent from this illustration is a fourth inner planet discovered later in 2009. With its intricate details capturing celestial mechanics and orbital dynamics within this alien planetary system, this artwork serves as a testament to human curiosity and scientific progress. It symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel the secrets hidden among stars while expanding our knowledge about distant worlds beyond our own solar system.
