Luna 2 commemmorative stamp

Luna 2 commemmorative stamp. Soviet postage stamp dedicated to the Luna 2 unmanned space probe, launched on 12 September 1959. The aim of the mission was to direct the probe on a collision course with the Moon. This was done successfully on 14 September (date shown at lower right), delivering a Soviet pennant to the Moons surface (shown at upper left). The mission carried scientific instruments that confirmed that there are no radiation belts around the Moon, and that the Moon does not have a magnetic field. Photographed in 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Luna 2 commemorative stamp, a remarkable Soviet postage stamp that pays tribute to the groundbreaking Luna 2 unmanned space probe. Launched on September 12,1959, this pioneering mission aimed to guide the probe towards a collision with the Moon. The stamp beautifully captures this historic moment by displaying the date of impact, September 14th, at its lower right corner. The image depicts an artistic illustration of Earth and a Soviet pennant delivered triumphantly to the lunar surface. This significant achievement was accompanied by scientific instruments onboard Luna 2 that confirmed two crucial discoveries: there are no radiation belts around our celestial neighbor and it lacks a magnetic field. Photographed in 1969, this stunning piece of artwork symbolizes not only technological advancement but also highlights Russia's contribution to space exploration during the intense Space Race era. The stamp features Cyrillic characters along with iconic symbols like the hammer and sickle flag representing Soviet Union pride. With elements such as lunar exploration trajectory and planetary science depicted on this philatelic gem, it serves as both a historical artifact and a testament to human curiosity about outer space. As we commemorate its significance even today—nearly ten years after its launch—the Luna 2 commemorative stamp stands as an enduring reminder of mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet.
