Giorgio Vasari, Italian artist and author

Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), Italian painter and biographer. Vasari was born at Arezzo in Tuscany. He was trained form an early age as an artist and at sixteen was sent to Florence. He was commissioned by the Medici and their friends as well as patrons in Naples. He was also excelled in architecture, being the creator of the Vasari Corridor in Florence linking the Ufizzi and Pitti palaces. He is best known today as an art historian and biographer. His Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects was published in 1550 and is seen as the first significant work of art history. This work of biography is filled with pieces of gossip, but has an excellent neutral aesthetic appreciation of the art he discusses. He was the first to use the term Renaissance in print. This woodcut comes from van Opmeers Opus chronographicum orbis universi published at Antwerp in 1611

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Giorgio Vasari, the renowned Italian artist and author who made significant contributions to the world of art and history. Born in Arezzo, Tuscany in 1511, Vasari displayed artistic talent from a young age and was sent to Florence at sixteen for further training. His exceptional skills earned him commissions from influential patrons such as the Medici family and their associates in Naples. Vasari's talents extended beyond painting; he also excelled in architecture, notably creating the iconic Vasari Corridor that connects the Ufizzi and Pitti palaces in Florence. However, his lasting legacy lies primarily in his role as an art historian and biographer. In 1550, he published "Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects" considered a groundbreaking work of art history. This publication introduced not only an excellent aesthetic appreciation but also gossipy anecdotes about various artists. Interestingly enough, it was Vasari who first used the term "Renaissance" within its pages – a testament to his profound influence on our understanding of this transformative period in European history. The woodcut featured here is sourced from van Opmeer's "Opus chronographicum orbis universi" published in Antwerp during 1611. Its monochrome presentation adds a timeless quality to this vertical composition capturing Giorgio Vasari's essence as both an artist himself and chronicler of others' artistic achievements.
