Historical art of the constellation of Sagittarius

Sagittarius. Coloured historical artwork of the constellation of Sagittarius. The constellation is shown as a centaur archer. Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the Zodiac. The Sun is in Sagittarius between 22 November and 21 December. It is a large and important constellation, and the centre of our galaxy lies in the Milky Way (pale band, right) by the top of his bow. The path of the Sun through the sky, the ecliptic, is shown by the black and red line in upper frame. This artwork is based on a sky map by the Polish-German astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), which was published posthumously in 1690

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork showcases the constellation of Sagittarius, depicted as a majestic centaur archer. As the ninth sign of the Zodiac, Sagittarius holds great significance in astrology and is associated with those born between 22 November and 21 December. The artist beautifully captures this celestial figure against a backdrop of stars, emphasizing its prominence in the night sky. Notably, this artwork highlights an intriguing fact about Sagittarius: it encompasses the center of our galaxy within the Milky Way. The pale band representing our galaxy gracefully curves by the top of the centaur's bow, symbolizing its cosmic importance. The upper frame features a black and red line that represents the ecliptic -the path followed by the Sun across our sky throughout each year. This detail adds depth to understanding how Sagittarius aligns with other constellations along this celestial trajectory. Based on a sky map created by Johannes Hevelius, a renowned Polish-German astronomer from centuries past (1611-1687), this print offers both artistic beauty and scientific accuracy. Published posthumously in 1690, Hevelius' work continues to inspire astronomers and stargazers alike. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable piece as part of their collection encompassing science, artistry, astronomy, cosmology, and more. It invites viewers to appreciate not only the wonders of space but also humanity's enduring fascination with exploring and understanding our universe through visual representation.
