High-pressure engine

Trevithick and Vivians high-pressure engine, historical artwork. Richard Trevithick (1771- 1833), a Cornish engineer and inventor, worked with his cousin Andrew Vivian on designs for high- pressure steam engines. In 1802, they filed a historic patent for stationary (pictured here) and locomotive engines. Trevithick continued to develop his engines, and in 1804 produced the first steam locomotive to run on a railway. Stationary engines such as this were used in factories, for example in an iron-rolling mill. Published in History and progress of the steam engine, England, 1830
