Herman Boerhaave, Dutch physician
Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738), Dutch physician, botanist, chemist, and founder of modern clinical medicine. After studying philosophy and medicine, Boerhaave began teaching at Leiden University. He was the first person to describe the sweat glands, and established that smallpox was spread by contact. Boerhaave became one of the most famous physicians in Europe, publishing two influential medical books and one on chemistry. He was elected to both the the French Academy of Sciences (1728) and the Royal Society (1730). This mezzotint engraving is by the English artist George White (c.1684-1732)
