Hellespontine Sibyl

Inlaid marble mosaic of the Hellespontine Sibyl, one of the ten Sibyls, set in the floor of the Duomo of Siena. Though these mosaics were created in 1482-3, the legendary Sibyls date from the myths of ancient Greece. Their role was that of prophetess, acting as oracles at the various holy sites of classical antiquity. These Siena Sibyls, each named after their locality, are now associated with Christian concepts. The Hellespontine Sibyl, known for her prediction of the Crucifixion, was often depicted with a cross, but here it is the inscription which alludes to the death of Christ. Whilst it has been suggested that the wolf and the lion beneath the inscription are the symbols of Siena and Florence, there are alternative views

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Hellespontine Sibyl, an exquisite inlaid marble mosaic located within the majestic Duomo of Siena. Created in 1482-3, these mosaics pay homage to the legendary Sibyls from ancient Greek mythology. Revered as prophetesses and oracles at sacred sites throughout classical antiquity, these Siena Sibyls have now become intertwined with Christian concepts. The Hellespontine Sibyl holds a significant place among her counterparts due to her renowned prediction of the Crucifixion. Traditionally depicted with a cross, this particular mosaic emphasizes the inscription that alludes to Christ's death. Interestingly, interpretations differ regarding the wolf and lion positioned beneath this inscription; some suggest they symbolize Florence and Siena while others propose alternative views. Steeped in legend and rich with symbolism, this image transports us back to a time when pagan beliefs coexisted alongside emerging Christian faith. The intricate craftsmanship of this marble mosaic serves as a testament to both ancient Greece's mythological heritage and Italy's artistic prowess during the Renaissance period. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable print not only as an aesthetic marvel but also as a window into history—a visual representation of cultural fusion where past meets present within the hallowed walls of one of Italy's most revered cathedrals.
