Helicene chiral hydrocarbon
Helicene molecule. A helicenes is a hydrocarbon formed of linked aromatic benzene rings. The rings are flat, but the physical presence of other rings in the structure forces the molecule into a spiral shape. As the spiral is set one way, either spiralling clockwise (as here) or anticlockwise, the molecule exhibits chirality. This means that it is non-superimposable on its mirror image. Most chiral molecules achieve this by having, for instance, four different side groups bonded to a central tetrahedral carbon atom. This is the case with most biological molecules. Helicenes are notable as they achieve chirality despite lacking these chiral centres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Helicene chiral hydrocarbon, also known as a Helicene molecule. Composed of interconnected aromatic benzene rings, this hydrocarbon possesses a unique characteristic - its flat rings are compelled into an elegant spiral shape due to the presence of other rings within its structure. In this particular image, we witness the mesmerizing clockwise spiralling motion that defines the chirality of this molecule. Chirality refers to the property of being non-superimposable on its mirror image. While most chiral molecules achieve this through distinct side groups bonded to a central carbon atom, helicenes defy convention by achieving chirality without these typical chiral centers. This makes them truly remarkable in the world of chemistry and compounds. The silver hue and organic nature depicted in this illustration beautifully capture both the scientific essence and aesthetic appeal of helicenes. Created through computer artwork based on molecular models, it serves as a testament to human ingenuity in visualizing complex structures at an atomic level. As we admire this stunning representation, let us marvel at how science continues to unravel nature's secrets and reveal hidden wonders like these polycyclic annulated hydrocarbons. This print from Science Photo Library is not only an artistic masterpiece but also an invitation for us to explore further into the fascinating realm of chemical compounds and their extraordinary properties.
