EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut print from the 16th century showcases the legendary Carthaginian general, Hannibal. Mounted on his majestic horse, he exudes power and determination as he wields a shield and sword. Known for his strategic genius, Hannibal led an invading army during the Second Punic War, which included fearsome war elephants that struck fear into the hearts of his enemies. For fifteen years, he successfully occupied vast territories in Italy. Created by Italian historian Paolo Giovio in 1575, this monochrome artwork captures the essence of Hannibal's military prowess and historical significance. The intricate details of this illustration bring to life a pivotal moment in ancient history when Rome clashed with Carthage. However, despite his remarkable achievements, Hannibal ultimately faced defeat at the hands of Roman general Scipio Africanus in North Africa. Nevertheless, his legacy lives on as one of antiquity's most renowned commanders. This woodcut portrait serves as a testament to both Hannibal's impact on warfare and Paolo Giovio's skillful artistry. It offers us a glimpse into a time long past while reminding us of the enduring fascination with classical history and its influential figures like Hannibal.
