Hanging Gardens of Babylon, 1679 artwork C016 / 8936

Hanging Gardens of Babylon. 17th-century artwork of the terraced gardens said to have been constructed in the city of Babylon in the 6th century BC for a queen of one of the kings. Numerous legends surround these gardens, one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Here, they are called the Gardens of Semiramis (Latin: Hortorum Semiramidis ), named after a legendary queen of Babylon. This depiction was drawn by the German Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher (circa 1601-1680) and published in his work on the Tower of Babel (also in Babylon): Turris Babel (1679)
