Halleys Comet in May 1910
Halleys Comet in May 1910. The April 1910 approach of Halleys Comet was the first for which photographs exist. The approach was relatively close, and on 18 May the Earth passed through the tail of the comet. Despite astronomers stating that the cometary tail was so diffuse that there would be no noticeable effect, the media published sensational and incorrect predictions of global cyanide poisoning. Halleys Comet is the only naked-eye comet certain to return within a human lifetime (every 75 years or so). It derives its name from Edmond Halley, an eighteenth-century astronomer who computed its orbit. The comet has been observed since at least 240 BC

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of Halley's Comet in May 1910, marking the first time photographs were taken of its approach. As one of the most famous comets in history, Halley's Comet has been observed for centuries and is known to return within a human lifetime every 75 years or so. Named after the renowned astronomer Edmond Halley, who calculated its orbit in the eighteenth century, this celestial wonder has fascinated astronomers and stargazers alike. In April 1910, as Halley's Comet made its relatively close approach to Earth, an extraordinary event occurred on May 18th when our planet passed through its tail. Despite astronomers assuring that there would be no noticeable effect from the comet's diffuse tail, sensational and inaccurate predictions of global cyanide poisoning flooded the media. This caused panic among people around the world. The black-and-white image showcases a significant milestone in astronomical history while reminding us of humanity's fascination with space exploration. It serves as a reminder that even though scientific knowledge has advanced greatly since then, speculation and media sensation can still lead to misinformation and unnecessary fear. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable photograph as part of their extensive collection documenting early astronomical discoveries and historical moments within our solar system.
