Guglielmo Marconi, radio inventor
Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937), Italian physicist and inventor of radio communications. A physics student, Marconi became interested in transmitting messages using the newly-discovered radio waves. After several promising experiments in Italy, lack of interest in his work compelled him to move to London, England, in 1896. In 1899 he succeeded in sending a radio message from England to France. In 1901, he sent the first message from England to Canada, a distance of over 3000 kilometres. This answered his critics and gave him instant fame. He spent the rest of his life refining his system, and was awarded the 1909 Nobel Prize for Physics
