Gross specimen of heart, myocardial infarction

Myocardial infarction. Sectioned heart showing an area of myocardial infarction (dark region, bottom left) in the left ventricle. The walls of this ventricle are also very enlarged, (ventricular hypertrophy) as compared with those of the right ventricle. Infarction usually results from a blockage in one of the two coronary arteries which provide the heart with its blood supply. Atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries is the cause in most cases. Plaques of atheroma (fatty substances) develop on the inner lining of the arteries restricting blood flow and encouraging the formation of clots. Damage to the heart muscle may be so severe that it leads to heart failure

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a gross specimen of a heart affected by myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. The image reveals a sectioned heart with a dark region in the bottom left corner, indicating an area of severe damage caused by the infarction. Additionally, the walls of the left ventricle appear significantly enlarged compared to those of the right ventricle, suggesting ventricular hypertrophy. Myocardial infarctions typically occur due to blockages in one or both coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. Atherosclerosis, characterized by fatty plaques forming on the inner lining of these arteries, is often responsible for restricting blood flow and promoting clot formation. In some cases, this damage can be so extensive that it leads to heart failure. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to prioritize cardiovascular health and take preventive measures against conditions like myocardial infarctions. It highlights not only the intricate structure and vulnerability of our hearts but also underscores the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles and seeking medical care when necessary.
