Griffons. This mythical creature is half-eagle, half-lion

Griffons. This mythical creature is half-eagle, half-lion and is believed to have watched over gold mines and hidden treasures. According to Scythian legend, the griffon inhabited the Scythia steppes (an area in Eurasia) where gold and precious stones were abundant. If strangers tried to remove these treasures, griffons would tear them to pieces. Scythians used giant preserved bones found in the area as proof of the existance of griffons and to scare away outsiders. It is now thought that these bones were in fact the fossils of a dinosaur called Protoceratops, which has an anatomy remarkably similar to that of the griffon

Eurasian Legend Myth Mythical Being Mythological Creature Mythology Protoceratops Winged Griffin Griffon Gryphon Scythian

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Griffons, mythical creatures that have fascinated cultures for centuries. Half-eagle and half-lion, these majestic beings were believed to be guardians of gold mines and hidden treasures. According to Scythian legend, they roamed the vast steppes of Scythia in Eurasia, where precious stones and gold abounded. The presence of griffons was said to deter strangers from attempting to pilfer these valuable resources. It is intriguing to note that the Scythians used giant preserved bones discovered in the region as evidence of their existence and as a means to frighten away outsiders. These bones were later identified as fossils belonging to Protoceratops, a dinosaur remarkably resembling the anatomy of this legendary creature. In this remarkable image captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported into a world where myth intertwines with reality. The duo of winged Griffons stands proudly against an ethereal backdrop, evoking awe and wonder within us all. Their regal stature symbolizes strength and protection while embodying both avian gracefulness and feline ferocity. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print, we are reminded of humanity's enduring fascination with mythology and its ability to shape our perceptions of history. This photograph serves as a testament not only to the power of imagination but also to our innate desire for adventure and discovery beyond what meets the eye.
