Green alga, TEM
Transmission electron micrograph of a section through a single cell green algae, Chlamydomonas asymmetrica. The micrograph shows the arrangement of chloroplasts, dark-stained bodies, around the circumference of the cell. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis in higher plants & green algae. They contain the light sensitive chloroplhyll pigments, which in a complex reaction leads to the production of sugar from carbon dioxide. Sugar may be store in the chloroplast as starch (white). Algal chloroplasts often contain a body called a pyrenoid (dark mass at centre of starch). Its function is unknown. Magnification X18, 000 (10x8 size), X 2570 (at 35mm size)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of green algae, specifically Chlamydomonas asymmetrica. Through a transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we are granted a glimpse into the inner workings of a single cell. The image highlights the arrangement of chloroplasts, which are dark-stained bodies encircling the cell's circumference. Chloroplasts play a vital role in photosynthesis for higher plants and green algae. They house light-sensitive chlorophyll pigments that facilitate the complex process of converting carbon dioxide into sugar. Interestingly, these sugar molecules can be stored within the chloroplast as starch, depicted here as white structures. Notably, algal chloroplasts often contain an enigmatic body known as a pyrenoid, visible as a dark mass at the center of starch accumulation. Despite its presence being well-documented, scientists have yet to fully comprehend its function. The level of detail captured in this TEM is truly remarkable; magnified 18,000 times for larger prints or 2,570 times when printed at 35mm size. This mesmerizing image serves as a testament to botanical science's ability to unravel nature's intricacies on even the tiniest scale.
