Goblet cells

Goblet cells. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through goblet cells in the lining of the small intestine, part of the digestive tract. They are full of mucus (yellow). A goblet cell secretes the mucus to protect the lining of the intestine. The brush-like surface of the small intestine consists of microvilli (red) which increase the surface area available for absorption of nutrients such as lipids, proteins and fat-soluble vitamins. The microvilli have a rapid turnover of 3-4 days. Magnification: x5500 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of goblet cells in the lining of the small intestine. The vibrant colors highlight the essential role these cells play in our digestive system. Goblet cells, depicted here in a false-colored transmission electron micrograph, are responsible for secreting mucus (shown in yellow) to protect and lubricate the intestinal lining. The image also reveals another fascinating feature of the small intestine – its brush-like surface composed of microvilli (depicted in red). These tiny projections significantly increase the surface area available for nutrient absorption, including lipids, proteins, and fat-soluble vitamins. Astonishingly, these delicate microvilli have a rapid turnover rate of 3-4 days. As we delve into this microscopic world within us, it becomes evident how intricately designed our bodies are to support physiological processes like digestion. This photograph not only offers a glimpse into human biology but also serves as a reminder of our body's remarkable complexity. Displayed at x5500 magnification when printed 10 centimeters wide, this visually stunning piece invites viewers to appreciate both the scientific significance and aesthetic appeal found within our own biological makeup. It is an awe-inspiring testament to nature's ingenuity and reminds us that even on a cellular level, there is much more than meets the eye.
