Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle C016 / 0597
Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This aircraft has a wingspan of 35 metres. Developed between 2001 and 2005 by Northrop Grumman for US military surveillance, Global Hawks are used by NASA for research. NASA obtained Global Hawks in 2007, and began operating them from 2009. Here, NASA Global Hawk number 871 is participating in a UAV-to-UAV refuelling demonstration with a second NASA Global Hawk. This refuelling demonstration is part of the KQ-X program (logos on the fuselage) funded by the USAs Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Photographed on 11 January 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), specifically the C016 / 0597 model. With its massive wingspan of 35 meters, this aircraft was developed by Northrop Grumman between 2001 and 2005 for military surveillance purposes. However, it has also found a new home in NASA's research endeavors since they acquired Global Hawks in 2007. In this particular image taken on January 11th, 2012, we witness an extraordinary moment as NASA's Global Hawk number 871 engages in a groundbreaking UAV-to-UAV refueling demonstration with another NASA Global Hawk. This remarkable feat is part of the KQ-X program funded by the prestigious Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The logos on the fuselage proudly display their involvement. The photograph captures both the technological marvel and engineering prowess behind these autonomous vehicles that are revolutionizing aviation. It symbolizes a significant milestone in drone technology and highlights how far we have come in transportation and surveillance capabilities. Taken at Dryden Flight Research Center, located within North America's United States, this image represents cutting-edge innovation at its finest. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of scientific progress. Credit for capturing this awe-inspiring moment goes to Carla Thomas from Science Photo Library on behalf of NASA.
