Giant pufferfish

Juvenile giant pufferfish (Arothron stellatus). When threatened, pufferfish gulp down water. This causes them to swell to up to twice their normal body size. It is a solitary animal found in the tropical Indo-West Pacific. It feeds on corals, sponges and crustaceans, crushing and grinding them with its powerful jaws and sharp teeth. Pufferfish are a delicacy in Japan, where they are eaten as sushi. However, they contain a powerful toxin, tetrodotoxin, that is fatal to humans, and so need to be prepared with care. Photographed in Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a juvenile giant pufferfish, known scientifically as Arothron stellatus. Residing in the tropical Indo-West Pacific, this solitary creature possesses a remarkable defense mechanism when threatened. By ingesting water, the pufferfish can inflate its body to twice its normal size, deterring potential predators with its imposing appearance. Feeding primarily on corals, sponges, and crustaceans, this aquatic marvel employs its powerful jaws and sharp teeth to crush and grind its prey. However, caution must be exercised when consuming these delicacies in Japan where they are enjoyed as sushi. The reason lies within their flesh - an incredibly potent toxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX). This substance is fatal to humans if not handled with utmost care during preparation. Captured amidst the enchanting Lembeh Strait in North Sulawesi, Indonesia by Science Photo Library's lensman or woman of expertise; this image encapsulates both the beauty and danger that coexist beneath our planet's waters. With mesmerizing hues and intricate details on display, it offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of marine biology. Let us appreciate nature's wonders from afar while acknowledging the significance of preserving these delicate ecosystems for future generations to cherish.
