Geyser steaming at sunset, Yellowstone Park

Geyser at sunset. A steaming geyser at sunset. Geysers (Icelandic " geysir" = gusher) consist of deep wells in geothermal rock fissures. Somewhere near the base of the well is a large chamber. The water in the chamber is heated by the surrounding rocks until it is well over normal boiling point, but is prevented from boiling by hydrostatic pressure. The heating also causes the water to expand, spilling from the lip of the well. At a critical point, the loss of water reduces the hydrostatic pressure to a level where the super- heated water boils spontaneously and erupts. Photographed at Yellowstone National Park, USA

Geothermal Activity Geyser Yellow Stone Geyser Basin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a geyser steaming at sunset in Yellowstone Park. As the sun sets on the horizon, its warm golden rays illuminate the billowing clouds of steam rising from the geyser, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Geysers, derived from the Icelandic word "geysir" meaning gusher, are formed by deep wells in geothermal rock fissures. Near the base of these wells lies a large chamber where water is heated by surrounding rocks to temperatures well above boiling point but remains prevented from boiling due to hydrostatic pressure. The intense heat causes the water to expand and spill over from the lip of the well. However, at a critical moment, when enough water has been lost and hydrostatic pressure decreases significantly, an extraordinary phenomenon occurs. The super-heated water within reaches its boiling point spontaneously and erupts with incredible force. This photograph not only showcases nature's raw power but also highlights Yellowstone National Park as one of Earth's most remarkable geological wonders. Known for its geothermal activity and vast geyser basins, this park offers visitors an opportunity to witness such awe-inspiring sights firsthand. Captured by Science Photo Library without any commercial intentions behind it, this image serves as a reminder of our planet's magnificent natural phenomena that continue to amaze us every day.
