Geranium flower stigma, SEM

Geranium flower stigma. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the stigma of a geranium flower (Geranium thunbergii). It is covered in tiny projections known as papillae (green/brown), which trap grains of pollen. The stigma is part of the female reproductive structure (pistil), which is formed from one or more carpels. Each carpel consists of a stigma, a style and an ovary (not seen). If the female sex cells (ovules) in the ovary become fertilised by the male genetic material which pollen grains contain, the carpel may ripen to produce a fruit containing seeds. Magnification: x120 at 6x7cm size

Carpel Flowering Part Papilla Papillae Parts Pistil Re Production Reproductive Stigma

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a geranium flower stigma. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are able to observe the delicate details of the stigma, which is an essential part of the female reproductive structure known as the pistil. The stigma is adorned with numerous tiny projections called papillae, depicted in shades of green and brown. These papillae serve a crucial role in trapping grains of pollen, enabling fertilization to occur. The ovary, not visible in this image, lies beneath the stigma and contains female sex cells called ovules. If these ovules become fertilized by male genetic material contained within pollen grains, they have the potential to develop into seeds. As a result, the carpel – composed of multiple carpels – may mature and produce a fruit that houses these precious seeds. With a magnification level of x120 at 6x7cm size, this SEM image allows us to appreciate both the structural complexity and natural elegance found within plants' reproductive systems. It serves as a testament to nature's ingenuity and reminds us of its remarkable ability to perpetuate life through reproduction. This stunning photograph from Science Photo Library offers an insightful glimpse into botany's wonders while highlighting one specific aspect: geranium thunbergii's fascinating flowering part - its stigma.
