George Cruikshank, British caricaturist

George Cruikshank (1792-1878), British caricaturist. Cruikshank was born in London and served his apprenticeship with his father, a prominent caricaturist of the late 1790s. Cruikshanks early work specialised in social commentary and political satire, especially aimed at Royalty. Politically neutral, Cruikshank was popular with the public for his deflation of pompous figures. He was a one-time friend of Dickens and illustrated some of his books (such as Oliver Twist). A campaigner for temperance, he left 10, 000 works at his death. Lithograph from volume 4 (1877) of the 9-volume The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne (1875-1880)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the essence of George Cruikshank, a renowned British caricaturist from the 19th century. Born in London, Cruikshank inherited his father's talent for caricature and quickly gained popularity for his social commentary and political satire. His work often targeted figures of authority, including members of royalty, with a unique ability to deflate their pompousness. Cruikshank's artistic prowess extended beyond caricature as he formed a friendship with Charles Dickens and illustrated some of the author's famous works like "Oliver Twist". Not only an artist but also a campaigner for temperance, Cruikshank left behind an impressive legacy of 10,000 works upon his death. The lithograph featured here is part of volume four (1877) from "The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne" a nine-volume collection spanning several years. It showcases Cruikshank's mastery in capturing human expressions and society's intricacies through art. Todd-White Art Photography has flawlessly preserved this historical piece that sheds light on both Georgian and Victorian eras while highlighting the cultural significance of satirical artwork during that time period. This print serves as a testament to George Cruikshank's immense contribution to British art history as well as his role in shaping social commentary through visual storytelling.
