Three generations of Mars rovers C013 / 7314
Three generations of NASA Mars rovers. At centre front is a flight spare for the first Mars rover mission, the Mars Pathfinder Project, measuring 65 centimetres long. At left is a test rover for the Mars Exploration mission, measuring 14.6 metres long, and at right is a test rover for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, measuring 3m long. The Mars Pathfinder Project rover, Sojourner, landed on Mars on the 4th July 1997. The Mars Exploration rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, landed in January 2004. The MSL rover Curiosity is due to land on the 5th August 2012. Photographed in the Jet Propulsion Laboratorys Mars Yard testing area, Pasedena, California, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases three generations of Mars rovers, representing the remarkable advancements in NASA's exploration of the Red Planet. At the center front stands a flight spare for the first-ever Mars rover mission, known as the Mars Pathfinder Project. This pioneering rover measures 65 centimeters long and played a crucial role in paving the way for future missions. To its left is a test rover designed for the Mars Exploration mission, stretching an impressive 14.6 meters long. This colossal machine symbolizes NASA's commitment to pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of Mars' mysteries. On the right side stands another test rover, this time built specifically for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission. Measuring 3 meters long, this advanced robotic vehicle represents cutting-edge technology and scientific innovation. The photograph was taken at Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Yard testing area in Pasadena, California - a hub of technological excellence where these incredible machines are put through their paces before embarking on their interplanetary journeys. From Sojourner - which successfully landed on July 4th, 1997 - to Spirit and Opportunity that touched down in January 2004, each generation has contributed invaluable data to our understanding of Martian geology and potential habitability. As we eagerly await Curiosity's landing scheduled for August 5th, 2012, this image serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity and unwavering determination to explore new frontiers beyond Earth.
