Galaxy NGC 2842, Chandra X-ray image
Galaxy NGC 2842, Chandra X-ray image. This active spiral galaxy is in the constellation Ursa Major, and is about 150 million light years distant. Areas of the galaxy emitting X-rays are shown in blue, and include clouds of hot gas rising above and below the plane of the galactic spiral arms. The process is thought to be fuelled by young, hot stars and supernovae explosions in the galaxy. Called galactic chimneys, these plumes of hot gas spread heavy, metallic elements away from the galactic plane, into the surrounding halo. The grey/white structure of the galaxy was obtained by an optical telescope. X-ray data obtained on 18 December 2004 by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in Earth orbit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Galaxy NGC 2842, as captured by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in Earth orbit. Located approximately 150 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major, this active spiral galaxy is a true celestial wonder. The image reveals areas emitting X-rays, depicted in striking shades of blue, which include ethereal clouds of hot gas rising above and below the galactic spiral arms. Dubbed "galactic chimneys" these plumes of scorching gas are believed to be fueled by young, hot stars and powerful supernova explosions within the galaxy. They play a crucial role in dispersing heavy metallic elements away from the galactic plane into its surrounding halo. The grey/white structure visible in this composite image was obtained through an optical telescope. This extraordinary snapshot not only highlights the intricate details and activity within NGC 2842 but also represents a significant milestone for scientific exploration. It serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of knowledge about our vast universe and deepens our understanding of astrophysics and astronomy. Captured on December 18th, 2004, this breathtaking photograph stands as a testament to human ingenuity and technological advancement. Its sheer magnificence invites us to ponder upon the mysteries that lie beyond our world while reminding us of how far we have come in unraveling those enigmas.
