Galaxy cluster Abell 1060

Galaxy cluster Abell 1060. Infrared composite image of the galaxy cluster Abell 1060, also called the Hydra cluster. More than 100 galaxies are clustered toward the southern constellation Hydra. Most of the stars in these galaxies are cool, old stars. The two very bright stars are in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Infrared can peer through the dense dust that obscures millions of stars from sight at visible wavelengths. These images were made as part of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project using ground based telescopes in the USA and in Chile. The project began in 1997 with the aim of surveying the entire sky with near-infrared

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Galaxy cluster Abell 1060, also known as the Hydra cluster. Located in the southern constellation Hydra, this giant group consists of more than 100 galaxies that have congregated together in a cosmic dance. The majority of these galaxies are adorned with cool and ancient stars, their shimmering light illuminating the vastness of space. In this infrared composite image, we witness a multitude of celestial wonders that would otherwise remain hidden from our sight at visible wavelengths. Infrared technology allows us to penetrate through dense dust clouds that obscure millions of stars within this galactic tapestry. The two brilliant stars shining amidst this sea of galaxies belong to our very own Milky Way galaxy, reminding us of our place within the grandeur of the universe. This stunning visual was created as part of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project, an ambitious endeavor initiated in 1997 to survey every corner of the sky using ground-based telescopes located both in the United States and Chile. As we delve deeper into cosmology and astrophysics, images like these provide invaluable insights into stellar evolution and galactic dynamics. Let your imagination soar as you explore this extraordinary snapshot captured by Science Photo Library's talented team – a testament to humanity's endless fascination with space exploration.
