The Galapagos Islands seen on one of Darwins maps

Darwins map. View of a map of the Galapagos Islands at Down house, Kent, England, where Charles Darwin (1809-1882) lived for the last 40 years of his life. It was at this house that he wrote his revolutionary work On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), and he did all his major thinking and writing there. Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands during his voyage on the HMS Beagle (1831-1836). It is a small group of islands west of South America (right), and almost on the equator (horizontal line). He noticed the diversity in the animals on each island, which provided him with data for his theories. Down House is now open to the public

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant piece of history - one of Darwin's maps depicting the mesmerizing Galapagos Islands. The map, carefully preserved at Down House in Kent, England, offers a glimpse into the mind of Charles Darwin during his final four decades on Earth. It was within these walls that he penned his groundbreaking masterpiece "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" in 1859. During his momentous voyage aboard the HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836, Darwin had the privilege to explore and study the enchanting Galapagos Islands. Situated west of South America and straddling the equator, these islands became a living laboratory for him. As he traversed each island, Darwin astutely observed an astonishing diversity among its animal inhabitants. The invaluable data collected during his time on these remote islands formed the bedrock for many evolutionary theories that revolutionized our understanding of life on Earth. This map serves as a testament to Darwin's meticulous research and intellectual prowess. Today, Down House stands as a monument to this great scientific mind and is open for public exploration. Visitors can immerse themselves in the same space where Darwin conducted all his major thinking and writing, gaining insight into how this remarkable man shaped our understanding of biology forever.
