Fly Geyser in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA

Fly Geyser. View of the continually erupting Fly Geyser in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA. Geysers are eruptions of underground water through holes in the ground. The calcite travertine cones are artificial, having formed around pipes put into the ground by an abortive mining operation. Similarly the surrounding pools, which contain green, algae-covered terraces (foreground), were formed by dredging. In this area, hot volcanic rock heats the base of a column of subsurface water forming steam. As steam takes up a larger volume than water, the water above is pushed out at the surface. The reduced pressure on the water remaining underground causes it to boil and erupt

Algae Calcite Cone Geyser Nevada Terrace Travertine Black Rock Desert Fly Geyser

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Fly Geyser in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA. The image captures the awe-inspiring sight of this geyser continually erupting with immense power and beauty. Geysers are natural phenomena where underground water forcefully bursts through openings in the earth's surface. The unique feature of this particular geyser lies in its artificial calcite travertine cones that have formed around pipes inserted into the ground during an unsuccessful mining venture. These striking formations add a surreal touch to the already stunning landscape. In addition to the geysers, one can also observe green terraces covered in algae-filled pools at the forefront of this photograph. These pools were created through dredging activities, further enhancing the visual appeal of this remarkable scene. The geological process behind these eruptions is fascinating - hot volcanic rock heats subsurface water columns, causing steam formation. As steam occupies more space than liquid water, it pushes outwards and propels water above ground level. The reduced pressure on remaining underground water leads to boiling and subsequent eruptions. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this extraordinary moment in nature's grand theater for us to marvel at its sheer magnificence. This print serves as a reminder of Earth's incredible forces and their ability to create breathtaking wonders like Fly Geyser in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.
