Flooded basin on surface of Triton

Visible light image of the surface of Triton, the largest of Neptunes moons. This image was made on 25 August 1989 at a distance of 40, 000 km. The large flooded basin seen here is about 200km wide and 400km long. It appears to have been formed from two large ancient craters. Later in Tritons history fluid has seeped across the floor of the craters, from a vent at the right hand end. In the region of the vent the surface is rough, suggesting the presence of large rafts of ice. The absence of significant impact cratering in the present basin suggests that this feature was formed in the recent past by solar system standards

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a flooded basin on the surface of Triton, Neptune's largest moon. Taken on 25 August 1989 from a distance of 40,000 km, this visible light image reveals an extraordinary sight. The expansive flooded basin stretches approximately 200km wide and spans an impressive length of 400km. Interestingly, it appears to have originated from two ancient craters that merged over time. What makes this image even more intriguing is the evidence of fluid seepage across the crater floor originating from a vent located at the right-hand end. The rough texture in this area suggests the presence of substantial ice rafts. Remarkably, there are no significant impact craters within this basin, indicating that it was formed relatively recently in terms of solar system standards. This mesmerizing snapshot not only provides valuable insights into Triton's geological history but also highlights its unique features as one of Neptune's moons. With its vast expanse and intricate details captured by Voyager imagery, this photograph offers scientists and enthusiasts alike an opportunity to marvel at the wonders found within our celestial neighborhood.
