First announcement of first manned rocket
First announcement of first manned rocket flight. The plan to build a manned rocket emerged from the Magdeburg Project, headed by Rudolf Nebel and Herbert Schaefer. The rocket was named the Magdeburger Pilotenrakete and would carry a man to an altitude of one kilometre, from where the pilot would bail out and return to earth by parachute. The first test rocket was launched on 29th June 1933 but was not a success and neither were following attempts, leading to the project being abandoned by the end of August 1933. Even though the Pilotenrakete never flew, it was a great promotional success, popularising rocket technology and the city of Magdeburg. Published in the periodical Raketenflug (Berlin) in April 1933

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the first announcement of the groundbreaking Magdeburger Pilotenrakete, a manned rocket that aimed to revolutionize space flight. Developed under the visionary leadership of Rudolf Nebel and Herbert Schaefer as part of the Magdeburg Project, this technological marvel was intended to propel a brave pilot to an altitude of one kilometer before safely returning them to Earth via parachute. Although the initial test launch on June 29th, 1933 did not yield success, subsequent attempts faced similar setbacks leading to the project's abandonment by August that same year. However, despite its failure to take flight, the Magdeburger Pilotenrakete became an extraordinary promotional triumph for both rocket technology and the city of Magdeburg itself. Published in April 1933 within Raketenflug - a renowned periodical based in Berlin - this historic news article showcased Germany's pioneering efforts in engineering and aeronautics during this transformative era. The mono chrome image transports us back to a time when dreams of space exploration were just beginning to materialize. With its rich historical significance and contribution towards popularizing rocketry across Europe, this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. It stands as an enduring symbol of innovation from early 20th-century Germany while reminding us how far we have come in our quest for scientific advancement.
