False-colour TEM of bacterium E. Coli

False colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal member of human intestinal flora. Under certain conditions it may become harmful causing an infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. The micrograph shows the bacterium dividing (binary fission), a pinching in process which divides the cell into 2 daughter cells. The green mass (centre of cells) highlights the nucleic acid (DNA), the genetic information, which lies unbound by a membrane in the bacterial cytoplasm. As experimental laboratory organisms, E.coli have supplied scientists with most of the genetic information available today. Mag: X17, 650 (at 35mm size)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. Coli. As a normal member of human intestinal flora, this bacterium plays an essential role in our bodies. However, under certain conditions, it can turn harmful and cause infections in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. The image beautifully captures the process of binary fission, where the bacterium divides into two daughter cells through a pinching-in mechanism. The green mass at the center of these cells represents the nucleic acid (DNA), which contains vital genetic information. Interestingly, unlike other organisms, E. Coli's DNA lies unbound by a membrane within its cytoplasm. E. Coli has been extensively studied in laboratories and has provided scientists with invaluable insights into genetics. In fact, most of today's available genetic information is thanks to research conducted on these experimental laboratory organisms. This stunning photograph not only highlights the intricate details of bacterial cell division but also serves as a reminder of how microscopic life forms like E. Coli significantly impact our health and scientific advancements.
