False-colour SEM of tapeworm

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head (scolex) & neck of a tapeworm, Taenia saginata, a parasite of the human intestine. T. saginata is the commonest tapeworm parasite in humans, varying in length from 4-10 metres. Its larval stage develops within muscles of cattle, & humans are infected through eating raw or undercooked beef. The presence of the worm in intestines give rise to increased appetite, hunger pains, weight loss, & general weakness. Worms are expelled from intestines using anthelmintic drugs such as niclosamide & dichlorophen. Magnification: x7 at 35mm size

Flat Worm Platyhelminthes False Coloured Taenia Saginata

EDITORS COMMENTS
This false-colour SEM print showcases the intricate details of a tapeworm, specifically the head (scolex) and neck region. The subject is Taenia saginata, a notorious parasite that inhabits the human intestine. Ranging from 4 to 10 meters in length, T. saginata holds the title for being the most common tapeworm found in humans. The life cycle of this parasitic creature involves its larval stage developing within the muscles of cattle. Humans become infected by consuming raw or undercooked beef containing these larvae. Once inside our intestines, these worms can cause various symptoms such as increased appetite, hunger pains, weight loss, and general weakness. To combat their presence in our bodies, anthelmintic drugs like niclosamide and dichlorophen are employed to expel them from our intestines effectively. This stunning image was captured at a magnification of x7 with a 35mm size lens using scanning electron microscopy techniques. As we delve into nature's microscopic wonders through this photograph, it serves as a reminder of both the complexity and fragility of life on Earth. It also highlights how closely intertwined human health can be with animals' well-being while emphasizing the importance of proper food preparation practices to prevent such infections.
