False-colour SEM of a spermatozoon on uterus wall

A spermatozoon on the uterine mucosa. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a spermatozoon floating over the endometrium, the internal wall of the uterus. Spermatozoa have pear-shaped heads about 7 microns long and a tail about 60 microns long. This image also shows the two different types of simple columnar cells which populate this area: ciliated (orange bottom left) and secretory (pink, yellow). During their journey through the uterus towards the Fallopian tubes spermatozoa undergo a capacitation process which enable them to penetrate and then fertilise an egg. Magnification: x2200 at 6x7cm size. x3465 at 4x5ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of a spermatozoon gracefully floating over the endometrium, which is the internal wall of the uterus. The pear-shaped head of this spermatozoon measures approximately 7 microns in length, while its tail extends to about 60 microns. What makes this image even more intriguing is that it also highlights two distinct types of simple columnar cells present in this area: ciliated and secretory cells. The ciliated cells can be seen in vibrant orange at the bottom left corner, while the secretory cells appear in shades of pink and yellow. As these remarkable spermatozoa embark on their journey through the uterus towards the Fallopian tubes, they undergo a crucial process known as capacitation. This process enables them to acquire the ability to penetrate an egg and ultimately fertilize it. The magnification used for capturing this extraordinary moment was x2200 at a size of 6x7cm or x3465 at 4x5ins. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured not only intricate details related to reproduction and anatomy but also shed light on various components such as spermatozoa, human body, false colouring techniques, uterus, reproductive system, endometrium (uterine mucosa), ciliated cells and secretory cells within the uterine wall.
