False-colour SEM of gastric gland in stomach
Gastric gland: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mucous membrane lining the stomach, featuring a single, circular gastric gland. The glands secrete gastric juice (hydrochloric acid & enzyme pepsin) and a protective mucous, derived from the simple, columnar cells (moss-like) that comprise the mucous membrane. Remnants of stomach contents appear yellow; one bit is over the opening to the gland. Gastric glands are formed by simple invagination or tubular ingrowth of this mucosa into the underlying lamina propria. Magnification: x550 at 6x7cm size. Different colour version as of Plate 12 in " Viaggio". This image yellow debris on jade blue, Plate 12 pale violet on bright green

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a gastric gland in the stomach. The mucous membrane lining the stomach is beautifully depicted, featuring a single, circular gastric gland at its center. These glands play a crucial role in digestion as they secrete gastric juice, which consists of hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin. Additionally, they produce a protective mucous derived from the simple, columnar cells that make up the mucous membrane. The remnants of stomach contents are visible in yellow hues throughout the image, with one piece even positioned over the opening to the gland. Gastric glands form through invagination or tubular ingrowth of this mucosa into the underlying lamina propria. Magnified at x550 and printed at 6x7cm size, this particular version features different colors compared to Plate 12 in "Viaggio". Here we see yellow debris against a jade blue background while Plate 12 presents pale violet on bright green. This mesmerizing image provides an intricate look into human anatomy and highlights various aspects related to gut health and digestion. It serves as an invaluable resource for scientific study and exploration within fields such as anatomy, digestive system research, and understanding gastric epithelium's functions within our bodies.
