False-colour SEM of bread mould

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a bread mould, Mucor mucedo, growing on the surface of a slice of bread. Spores circulate freely in the air. When they alight on a favourable medium, they germinate an extensive network of thread-like hyphae, the function of which is to absorb nourishment for growth & for the production of sporangia, which contain a new crop of spores. The picture shows the hyphae covering the surface of the bread. The globular structures at the ends of specialised hyphae (sporangiophores) are the sporangia, where the spores mature until the wall ruptures & dispersal occurs. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size, x50 at 6x4.5cm size. BW is print B250/328

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of bread mould, offering a mesmerizing glimpse into the life cycle of Mucor mucedo. In this false-colour scanning electron micrograph, we witness the relentless growth and propagation of this fungal species on the surface of a slice of bread. The image reveals an extensive network of thread-like hyphae that cover every inch of the bread's surface. These hyphae serve as vital conduits for absorbing nourishment to sustain growth and facilitate sporangia production. The globular structures observed at the ends of specialized hyphae are known as sporangiophores, which house maturing spores until they reach maturity. As airborne spores find their way onto a favorable medium like bread, they germinate rapidly, initiating this fascinating process captured in vivid detail. The magnification level employed in creating this print allows us to appreciate these microscopic wonders with astonishing clarity – x30 at 35mm size or x50 at 6x4.5cm size. Through this remarkable photograph by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into nature's resilience and adaptability even within seemingly mundane environments like our kitchen countertops. It serves as a reminder that beauty can be found even in unexpected places if we take the time to explore and appreciate our natural surroundings.
