False-col TEM of rotaviruses

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of the rotavirus. Individual virions consist of a protein capsid (orange & green, with a " wheel-like" appearance) surrounding a core of double-stranded RNA. Rotaviruses belong to the Reovirus genus, whose members possess icosahedral symmetry, are 65-75 nanometers in size and are non-enveloped. Other members of virus families are surrounded by a lipoprotein envelope derived from the host cells membranes. The rotavirus causes infantile gastroenteritis in humans, mice & calves. Magnification: X 103, 000 at 35mm size

Rota Virus Virus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of rotaviruses, captured through a false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The image reveals the mesmerizing structure of these tiny virus particles, known as virions. Each individual virion is composed of a protein capsid that exhibits vibrant shades of orange and green, resembling a wheel-like formation. Enclosed within this exterior lies a core made up of double-stranded RNA. Belonging to the Reovirus genus, rotaviruses possess icosahedral symmetry and measure between 65-75 nanometers in size. Unlike some other viruses, they do not have an enveloped outer layer derived from host cell membranes but instead remain non-enveloped. It is worth noting that this particular photograph does not represent any commercial use or reference to any specific company. Rotaviruses are notorious for causing infantile gastroenteritis in humans, mice, and calves alike. Their impact on health cannot be underestimated as they contribute to episodes of diarrhoea and gastroenteritis in affected individuals. The level of detail captured by this TEM image is truly remarkable; it provides us with valuable insights into the complex nature of these viral agents. With its magnification set at X 103,000 at 35mm size, this print from Science Photo Library serves as both an educational tool for researchers studying viruses and an awe-inspiring visual representation for those fascinated by the microscopic world around us.
