False-col TEM of polio virus particles

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of numerous virions (virus particles) of the polio virus, the causative agent of poliomyelitis. Polioviruses belong to the enterovirus sub-group of the picornaviruses (small RNA viruses) & occur as 3 antigenically-distinct types; type 1 is responsible for the majority of polio epidemics. Infection occurs through the mouth, with the virus travelling via lymph nodes in the gut & upper respiratory tract to the central nervous system, where viral replication (especially in horn cells of spinal cord) may produce paralytic poliomyelitis (causing death or severe & permanent disability). Magnification: x29, 400 at 35mm size

Picornavirus Polio Rna Virus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showcases the polio virus particles in all their intricate glory. The polio virus, infamous for causing the debilitating disease known as poliomyelitis, is depicted here in numerous virions. Belonging to the enterovirus sub-group of picornaviruses, these small RNA viruses are responsible for three distinct types of poliovirus. Type 1, featured prominently in this image, is notorious for triggering the majority of devastating polio epidemics that have plagued humanity throughout history. Infection occurs when the virus enters through the mouth and then travels via lymph nodes in both the gut and upper respiratory tract towards its ultimate destination: the central nervous system. Once there, viral replication takes place with particular intensity within horn cells of the spinal cord. This replication process can lead to paralytic poliomyelitis - a condition that can result in death or severe and permanent disability. Magnified at an astonishing x29,400 at a 35mm size print, this photograph from Science Photo Library offers us a glimpse into one of nature's most formidable adversaries. It serves as a stark reminder of both our vulnerability and our ongoing battle against infectious diseases like polio caused by RNA viruses such as picornaviruses.
