False-col. radio map of active galaxy Centaurus A
Radio map of active galaxy Centaurus A. Located 16 million light years away, Centaurus A has two huge radio-emitting lobes which reach 2.5 million light years above & below the galaxy itself. In this contour map, the galaxy (the most intense source of radio-emission) is coloured pink & red. The two radio lobes are produced by fast electrons which stream out from the galaxy & generate elongated clouds of magnetic field. These clouds trap the electrons & cause them to emit synchrotron radiation in the form of radio waves. The data for the map was obtained by the Parkes radio telescope, Australia, at a wavelength of 21cm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the false-color radio map of the active galaxy Centaurus A, located an astounding 16 million light years away. The image reveals two colossal radio-emitting lobes that extend a staggering 2.5 million light years above and below the galaxy itself. In this contour map, the intense source of radio emission, which is the galaxy itself, appears in vibrant shades of pink and red. The awe-inspiring phenomenon responsible for these remarkable features involves fast electrons streaming out from the galaxy and generating elongated clouds of magnetic field. These magnetic clouds act as traps for the electrons, causing them to emit synchrotron radiation in the form of mesmerizing radio waves. The data used to create this extraordinary map was obtained by none other than Australia's renowned Parkes radio telescope at a wavelength of 21cm. This cutting-edge technology allows us to delve deeper into our understanding of galaxies, cosmology, and galactic activity. As we gaze upon this breathtaking image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded once again how vast and enigmatic our universe truly is. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and scientific exploration as we continue unraveling its mysteries one celestial marvel at a time.
